What Past Renters Say

Here’s what a few folks who have stayed at The Student Exchange House have to say about their experiences:

Mike and Marsha’s student exchange houses offer everything that you would need for your exchange semester: everything furnished, flexible lease times, almost instant communication and all that at a very fair price. Would recommend everyone to stay at one of their houses during their exchange at Duke! — Roland (2022) Austria [2515 Chapel Hill Road]

Highly recommend the Student Exchange House because it is really fully furnished, flexible and the owners are super welcoming and responsive in every requests. I also loved my roommates here. Jia (2022) From China. [2515 Chapel Hill Road]

The Student Exchange House is the perfect place to stay if you are an international exchange student studying abroad at Duke University. The landlords, Mike and Marsha, are fantastic people and they only wish for you to have a great stay at one of their houses. Magnus (2023) Denmark.  [3204 Sprunt Ave]

Living in the Student Exchange House is an excellent experience. Mike and Marsha are nice, friendly, patient, and enthusiastic about solving your problems. They organized everybody in the house as a lovely family. Roommates here not only looked out for each other but also talked about our culture, history, study, and future. I enjoyed it and learned a lot from it! The house itself is big, warm, beautiful, and very close to the Duke campus and the supermarket. Thus, I highly recommend the Student Exchange House. Zhenhao (2023) Ph.D. student from China.  [3115 Sprunt Ave.]

I stayed at 2515 Chapel Hill Rd. for three months and absolutely loved it. Mike and Marsha are very welcoming and super responsive in case something needs to be fixed around the house. The house is a short biking distance from Duke and a grocery store is within walking distance. I was lucky to live with four great roommates and felt at home immediately. Jasmin (2023) Phd student from Germany.  [2515 Chapel Hill Road]

I was in the 3204 Sprunt Avenue house. Mike and Marsha are amazing hosts. They always catered to any of my needs. They picked me up from the airport and even dropped me there when I was going back home. I didn’t have to spend any money on utensils/towels/furniture… because they were already provided and the rent is so reasonable compared to what you get. Being in an all-female household is so convenient and made me feel comfortable; the house felt like home! And it made my transition to North Carolina and grad school easier than it would’ve been. The house also had an AC and heater which is amazing specially due to North Carolina’s crazy weather. In addition, seven minutes away (walking distance) is a plaza that has pharmacies, restaurants, and markets (Harris Teeter and Dollar general), which makes it easy to get what you need. If you drive a car, that would be a great drive to campus because it’s five minutes away. If you don’t you have three options: 1 – M&M provide you with a bike that you can ride to campus which is an easy convenient option or 2- you can take the bus which is 8, 10, or 15 minutes away walking distance (depending on which bus stop) or 3- you can walk and Duke is huge so the number of minutes to get there depends on your destination. This house is highly highly recommended!!

Having lived at 9 places around Durham, including luxury apartments, cheap apartments and all 3 houses of Mike and Marsha, I can proudly say that the student exchange house is one of the best options near Duke. Each house has its own unique structure and unique vibe. House on a Chapel Hill Rd is the house where you will bump into your roommates the most and creates an atmosphere of closeness between everyone.  Both Sprunt houses are on the Duke bus passway, which makes it ideal for a 15-minute commute to Fuqua or any other school on West Campus. Overall, Mike and Marsha are the most welcoming renters in the RDU area and I love that any maintenance issue was fixed in a single day. They would always address any of your concerns and make sure to do the best of their ability to make student exchange house becomes your 2nd home”

“This is one of the best options to live right next to Duke Campus for an affordable price. Well connected, furnished and cosy houses with all amenities you could possibly need (a bike, printer, etc.) included. Plus you get to live with friendly housemates (Dukies as well), which means that you can build friendships here as well. Definitely recommend.”

Mateusz, from Poland, 3115 Sprunt Ave., 2018-2019

I stayed at 3204 Sprunt Ave., It was a great experience, the house is very good, perfectly located near to Duke University, supermarket and pharmacy store, the neighborhood is very quiet (Definitely, I’m going to miss that). Besides the place, Mike and Marsha are very nice people, everything went right about payments, and fixing stuff; I don’t have any complaints, in fact I feel very grateful with both, they are very open and warm people, Thanks 🙂

“The student exchange house offered me everything I needed for my time at Fuqua! It was very convenient with furniture, bedding, towels and excellent wifi. It is situated about 50 minutes walk from Fuqua in the morning and a short Duke Van ride back in the evening. I had great housemates and we made lots of friends – even inviting the exchange group over for a barbecue and a game of foosball.”

I lived at Sprunt Avenue 3115 for about 4 months in 2016. The house is fully furnished, so I don’t have to bring a lot with me to another country for a short stay, which was really thoughtful. Also, Kroger is just a 10 min walk away from the house, and the bus stop is a 5 min walk away. Living there was convenient for Duke students. Mike and Marsha are both nice people; they really care about our needs, and they welcome opinions. Before I went there, I was worried because I am not used to drying my clothes with dryer machines. We just don’t do that in China. After I expressed my concerns to them, and they were so nice that they put strings in the carpool so that I can dry my clothes there. It was a lovely 4-month experience.

Shuxin, from China (3115 Sprunt Avenue, fall 2016)

“I spent very happy 5 months in Mr and Mrs Green’s lovely house. The price is very reasonable and the house equipped with almost all the facilities you need in the daily life. It was so great that I did not have to buy them. In addition, I got very friendly house mates who are  duke exchange students. The traffic is very convenient. I could go to school by bus or by bike and if I came home late I could take duke van (the house is in the duke safe ride service area).  Safe, comfortable and warm house. I really love it!”

If you’re coming for an exchange to Duke, then the Student Exchange House from Mike and Marsha Green should be your first choice. Thanks to Mike and Marsha’s outstanding hospitality, I felt immediately comfortable and home. This experience was enriched by sharing the house with people from different countries and helped me to make friendships that go beyond this exchange semester.

David, from Vienna (at 2515 Chapel Hill Road, fall 2016)

“I stayed in the Student Exchange House on Sprunt Ave. for ten months and really enjoyed my stay there. It was a great opportunity to get to know people from various countries. The house was beautiful and I really enjoyed relaxing in the backyard. It was also very close to Duke shuttles so it was never a problem for me to commute to Duke campus. Mike and Marsha were really helpful, understanding and kind. It was a great experience and I wish I could extend my stay!”

— Kerem, from Turkey (at 3204 Sprunt Ave., 2016)

“Mike and Marsha were probably some of the nicest people I’ve ever met! They were extremely hospitable and wanted to make sure everyone in the house felt welcomed. If ever there was a problem, they were quick to respond and resolve the issue. I would absolutely recommend this place for anyone.”

Tim, from South Carolina (at 3204 Sprunt Ave., fall 2016)

“I had the opportunity to stay in 3204 sprunt Avenue in November 2016 for a full month during my training at Duke University Medical center – and it was the first time I visited the USA. I would like to deeply thank Mike and Marsha for their hospitality. The room was like staying in a 5 stars hotel. The house was clean, was fully equipped and calm. Mike and Marsha are very friendly and helpful; They even picked me up from and to the airport. If I visit Duke again I will definitely stay there.”

Chadi, from Lebanon

“Staying in the Sprunt House is one important factor that makes my Duke experience terrific!  The house is close to Duke; the surrounding environment is inviting and lovely. Affordable rate for good-quality living. Particularly suitable for exchange students for its flexible leasing period!!! Lots of good things about the House. But for me, the best part of Sprunt House is its diversity of renters, which enables international students like me to significantly benefit from the everyday cultural exchange with other roommates. I truly believe that studying abroad means way much more than just getting educated at Duke, your roommates also mean a lot for your Duke experience. That’s also why I highly appreciate staying in Mike and Marsha’s house because they give me a wonderful chance to closely learn from, befriend with and enjoy living with other international roommates.”

Dewey, from China (3204 Sprunt Ave., Fall 2015)

“Coming from the other side of the world (New Zealand), it wasn’t easy organising accommodation, however Mike and Marsha’s friendly manner made it really straight forward and easy. They picked me up from the airport and helped me get my ‘feelers on the ground’ before beginning my time at Duke.”

Nice place to stay, old houses but the Greens are always on your side to ensure a pleasant stay. As Kurayish who I roomed with and are still in touch with pointed out in the comment below, having the chance to develop close rapport with your roommates are definately a plus too!
